St Albans has long been known as the "Railroad City." because of its historic importance as a primary rail terminus as well as the northern most gateway to the state of Vermont. St. Albans is on the shore of Lake Champlain.
Historic St Albans
The City of St Albans is located near Lake Champlain in the Northwest corner of the state and was originally settled in 1774 and incorporated as a city in 1897. During the Civil War period, Saint Albans was the scene of the northernmost engagement of the American Civil War. In 1864, the Saint Albans Raid occurred when Confederate soldiers entered the town from neighboring Canada and robbed several banks.
Today, the Saint Albans Historical Museum attracts thousands of history buffs and visitors annually.

Montpelier is the nation's smallest state capital and is located in central Vermont at the confluence of the Winooski and North Branch Rivers. Montpelier features the nation’s oldest and best preserved state capital. The State House is famous for its brilliant gold dome which measures 57 feet high and is made of wood sheathed in copper and covered with 23.7 carat gold leaf. The House and Senate chambers are the oldest legislative chambers in their original condition anywhere in the country.

St Albans Activities & Points of Interest

Anuual Maple Festival
Maple exhibit hall & Vermont maple store, arts & crafts, parade, pancake breakfast.

Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail
A 30-mile all-season recreation path which largely parallels Route 105 and the Missisquoi River between Richford and St. Albans. The packed gravel surface is suitable for walking or biking (both street and mountain equipment) and XC skiing in winter. Closed to motorized vehicles except in winter. Easy access to refreshments at several points. As of the Fall of 2002, the trail is complete for its entire length, with the replacement of the collapsed segment of the former rail bridge at Sheldon Junction.

St. Albans Historical Society
Museum has eleven rooms in a three-story brick building (a school house) constructed in 1861. The first two floors are dedicated to exhibits about Central Vermont Railway, history of Champlain valley, and St. Albans (as portrayed by a large diorama), a school room, a medical history exhibit, a home and hearth room, an exhibit concerning Western Abenakis, a military history room, and a room dedicated to local musician Sterling Weed.
